Aari Work vs Machine Embroidery: How to Tell the Difference

22 Oct 2026 · 4 min read · By Sanmi Creation

Machine embroidery is fast and cheap. Aari work is done by hand, stitch by stitch, with a hooked needle on a wooden frame. Here is how to tell them apart.

1. Look at the back of the fabric

Machine embroidery leaves dense, regular threads and often a stiff backing sheet. Hand Aari shows a softer chain pattern with small natural variations.

2. Check for stones and beads

Machines cannot set kundan, stones or bead fringes. If these are part of the design, they were placed by hand.

3. Feel the drape

Machine work with backing makes fabric stiff. Good hand Aari keeps the silk soft enough to move with you.

4. Perfect repetition

Every motif in machine work is identical. Hand Aari has tiny differences — a sign of real craft, not a flaw.

Why hand Aari is worth it

Hand work can follow any design, any neckline and any size. It can mix zari, thread, stones and beads, and it lasts for years with care.
